What is North American culture facing in 2023-2024?
1 | Addiction to Technology
Social-media has become intellectual infrastructure for the average individual in 2023. This leads to increased distraction, lack of attention, and fading aspirations as we find our capacity to think, listen, and communicate is steadily diminished.
2 | Loss of Learning
The foundational truths of the past, including our knowledge of history, art, literature, and science, are no longer central to society’s program of education. As T.S. Eliot said, we no longer agree on a body of knowledge which every educated person should acquire.
3 | Communities at War
Our public discourse is marked by antagonism, disdain, or the uncritical support of one team or tribe. Gossip is rampant. Forgiveness and self-sacrifice are fading from the public square, and so too is our capacity to engage those we disagree with.
How can Augustine College help you face it?
1 | Learn to Think as a Christian
Modelled by Christian Professors, Augustine College will equip you with the tools necessary to control your thoughts and speech in the midst of a world addicted to distraction.
2 | Learn what is True
Engage with “the best that has been thought or said” across thousands of years of life and culture in the context of Christian community. Learn the truth, not as a relativistic, self-centered expression of power, but as objective reality given by God, which we can know.
3| Learn in Mere Community
Join a thriving community from all communions of Christendom, learning together in the spirit of C.S. Lewis’ Mere Christianity. Our emphasis is on the rich contributions across time and Christian tradition: on the things that unite us as followers of Jesus Christ and give us the resources to serve a broken world.
