The History of Western Civilization: The Ancient World

This course covers the development of the uniquely self-aware culture known as ‘Western civilization’ from its origins in the geography and ecology of the early Holocene through the emergence of Greece and Rome, the rise of Christianity, and the coming of self-government in Britain in the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.

This course covers the further development of the uniquely self-aware culture known as ‘Western civilization’ from the Enlightenment and the spread of European influence to the Industrial Revolution, challenges to the West from within and without in the 19th and 20th centuries and the coming of postmodernism.
